When to hire an interior designer
The best time to involve an interior designer is earlier than most people expect. Ideally before walls are moved, before joinery is drawn, and certainly before finishes are specified. Design decisions made at the architectural stage carry through every later layer of the project.
A typical residential project unfolds in clear phases. Concept design establishes the direction, the mood, the palette, and the spatial intent. Developed design resolves layouts, joinery, lighting, and material specifications. Technical design produces the drawings and schedules required for construction. Procurement and installation bring the scheme to life on site.
Fees are usually structured as a fixed design fee, a percentage of project value, or a combination of the two, with procurement handled transparently. What matters more than the structure is clarity, knowing what is included, what is not, and how decisions will be made.
Clients who arrive with a clear sense of how they want to live, rather than a fixed image of how the home should look, tend to receive the most personal results. The brief is a conversation, not a checklist.
